Drafting Table Hack

Working on a flat table when drawing or painting is evil on your neck and back. Having a drafting table that tilts is much better ergonomically and it also allows for a better perspective of your work.

I use a beautiful rubber wood drafting table and prefer it being set at max tilt. The problems I have with it is that I have to keep my tools on an adjacent desk or shelf. That's not efficient. I also have nowhere to set an iPad that it doesn't slide down the table top.

The side trays that screw to the underside edge of the table top was not an option for my pencils and brushes because they typically do not hold tools in a way that makes any sense to me and they are not cheap for what they are - plastic.

Black rubber shelf liner is what I use in my tool box drawers in the garage. It's grippy and I thought maybe that material might work but I didn't have any scraps left to try. This evening, we were shopping at Publix and I checked the household isle to see if they had any because It's also used for cabinet liners. I bought the smallest roll they had for $1.99 just to see if I could at least solve my iPad problem. When I got back to the studio and unrolled it onto the smooth tilted top, everything stuck securely to it - iPad, phone, pencils, brushes as well as my glasses. I'm not limited to location of placement with this solution because I can move it anywhere I need it. I will cut this down to the sizes I think I need. Problem solved!!
